Claims prize on Classic Crossword game
When Danielle Fluharty of Mardela Springs stopped by a check-cashing business with her boyfriend, she wound up taking home a lot more cash than originally planned. Several scratch-offs the couple bought there contributed to the tally, especially the $5 Classic Crossword game Danielle picked out. Her winning scratch-off bumped up the total by a hefty $10,000!
The 23-year-old waitress loves Maryland Lottery scratch-offs, playing at least one almost every day. She and Brandon Nauman visited United Check Cashing at 726 S. Salisbury Boulevard in Salisbury to trade a paycheck for some cash.
“I noticed that they sold instant tickets so I bought a few,” she said. “Just about every one of them was a winner!” She purchased one more instant ticket with their Lottery winnings – the lucky Classic Crossword scratch-off – and the couple headed home.
Just before leaving for work, Danielle played her crossword game.
“I kept seeing word after word and it looked to me that we’d won another $1,000,” she said. Later, while at the restaurant, the Wicomico County woman glanced at her ticket again and noticed a few more words that she hadn’t counted earlier. That glance changed the $1,000 win into $10,000.
“I called Brandon to tell him that I’d read the ticket wrong,” she said. “I could tell he thought I was going to say that we hadn’t won. He sure was surprised.”
They both drive “slightly unreliable” used cars, so some of the prize may go to improve their transportation situation. Danielle also wants to share some of their good fortune with her mom.
The new Classic Crossword game launched July 27 still has all four $50,000 top-prize tickets available and 12 of 16 $10,000 winners awaiting discovery.
