Beltsville man to surprise wife with $50,000 prize
A retired warehouse manager confessed to Maryland Lottery officials last week that he has a secret daily ritual that he can no longer hide from his spouse. Every morning, the Beltsville man drops his wife off at work and then stops to buy a few scratch-offs on his way home. Now, he has to clue her in on the $50,000 top prize he won playing the Winning Streak instant game.
“I’ll tell her about this win today,” the 78-year-old man promised on Friday. “She can’t get too angry with me for playing now, right?” A $5 Winning Streak scratch-off he purchased at Sunrise Market & Deli in Beltsville delivered its top-prize win to the happy husband.
“It was the first ticket in Sunrise Market’s display, that’s the only reason I picked it.” He found his $50,000 prize under the first and only matching number he saw on the scratch-off. “Wow! This can’t be right,” he said to himself as he handed the instant ticket to the cashier to check. She had a similar reaction. “Her eyes got real big. All she said was, ‘Wow!’”
Friday’s winner knew almost immediately how he and his wife would use their $50,000 prize. “We’ve gotten rid of all of our significant debt, except for two big bills. This will cover them,” he said. “What a relief it’ll be for her.”
Sunrise Market & Deli at 10800 Rhode Island Avenue in Beltsville provided their relief and his reprieve. For selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, the store earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery. Our winner can also thank the Winning Streak game, which debuted just last month. This Beltsville win leaves seven more $50,000 top prizes awaiting discovery.
