Four of Harford County’s “Magnificent Multi-Match Seven” celebrate their $750,000 jackpot win at Maryland Lottery headquarters. Congrats!

Players realize dream of winning jackpot after decades of play

Four representatives of the “Magnificent Multi-Match Seven” stepped forward this week to claim the $750,000 Multi-Match jackpot from the May 23 drawing.

The contingent told Maryland Lottery officials that their seven-member group has loyally chased the in-state game’s jackpots long before 2006, when Lotto transitioned to today’s Multi-Match game. The lucky winners include a teacher, a machinist, a carpet salesperson, two business owners and a pair of brothers. The seven friends hail from Aberdeen, Abingdon, Bel Air and Edgewood.

According to the representatives, the group gathers regularly at Giovanni’s Restaurant in Edgewood to collect money for the Multi-Match jackpot pool and exchange that week’s lucky tickets. The following day, the group receives a performance report via text message.

“Usually it was like $2 here or $20 there, but we got a message the next day with what we won and we were responding ‘Yeah, right,’ ” explained one member.

The pool organizer dispelled all but one player’s doubts about the jackpot win by sending a photo of the ticket and making phone calls. The last player became convinced after seeing the news appear on a Keno screen that the winning ticket was sold in Joppa.

The “Magnificent Multi-Match Seven” said the win was a product of decades of regular play and a bit of luck. Each ticket the group plays uses a string of randomly selected quick-pick numbers. The winning ticket cost $2.

The friends have a variety of plans for their share of the winnings, which came to $40,878.58 per person after taxes. The group elected to take the jackpot’s cash option. Several members said they would bank their shares, share some of the proceeds with family members or perhaps use a portion for a trip.

The lucky ticket came from Winters Run Inn located at 1907 Philadelphia Road in Joppa. For selling the jackpot winning Multi-Match ticket, the lucky Harford County location will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery. This win marks the third Multi-Match jackpot hit in 2019.
