Frederick County man wins with Fabulous 5s Doubler game
On the way out of a Frederick County grocery, an Adamstown man decided to add one more item to his shopping cart – a Maryland Lottery scratch-off. That spur-of-the-moment shopping decision bagged our buyer the $50,000 top prize on the Fabulous 5s Doubler scratch-off.
The 68-year-old enjoys playing scratch-offs once or twice a week. While shopping at the Giant grocery in Frederick, the loyal player spotted one of the Lottery’s instant ticket vending machines. He selected the $5 game, which is new.
“I figured I’d try a ticket while I was right there,” said the restaurant industry retiree. “I scratched it in my car outside and, when I saw that I had won, quickly ran back inside.”
Not sure if he could trust what he was seeing, the father of three asked the clerk to check the ticket. The employee did and confirmed the win. “I refused to believe just how much I’d won until I came here today,” the grandfather of four told Lottery officials. “I’m very happy … surprised and happy.”
Although his family is typically a low-key group, they enjoyed celebrating the win, said a son who accompanied his dad to claim the prize. “It’s been a happy couple of days for all of us.” Paying bills and sharing his good fortune with his family is the winner’s plan for the $50,000 prize.
The Fabulous 5s Doubler game hit store shelves just last month and this Frederick County top-prize win is the ticket’s first.
