Groundskeeper collects $50,000 from May drawing
A groundskeeper is digging life today after claiming a $50,000 Powerball prize from the May 25 drawing. The lucky Montgomery County man enjoys playing both Mega Millions and Powerball and says his choice of Lottery games is the key to his success.
“I play only the jackpot games because that’s how you win the big bucks,” he told Maryland Lottery officials.
The 60-year-old bought his lucky ticket and several others after work on May 25 at 7-Eleven #27670 located at 4199 Kenilworth Avenue in Bladensburg. After purchasing his tickets, the Silver Spring resident went on with life as usual. The next day, the groundskeeper remembered the tickets and took them to another Lottery retailer to check the numbers. His $2 quick-pick ticket was a winner!
“The cashier told me it was too high to cash there,” he said. “And then, we realized it was $50,000!”
The lucky landscaper was the only Maryland Powerball player who won a $50,000 prize in the drawing. He was one of 12 players nationally who took home that prize. Because he does not drive, the winner took a few weeks to claim the prize and arrived at Lottery headquarters courtesy of a friend. The lucky player said he will treat his friend to dinner and plans to save the rest of his prize.
