When a retired Silver Spring resident decided to buy a couple of 50x The Cash scratch-offs on a whim, his spur-of-the-moment decision made him a $100,000 winner.
He walked into Fairland Market on May 5 to play a few games of Racetrax but the computer-animated horses didn’t run his way. “I played three games and didn’t win anything,” he said. “I still had $20 in my pocket, so I decided to try a scratch-off.”
The $10 50x The Cash instant ticket he bought paid a prize of $10, which he used to buy one more 50x The Cash scratch-off. His second instant ticket did the trick!
“I scratched off the code at the bottom and scanned it and it said ‘Take to cashier,’ ” said the 63-year-old. “I had won $500 a couple years ago, so I knew it had to be at least that much. The two guys at the store weren’t sure what to make of it, so I started scratching off the numbers and when I matched 41 and saw the $100,000, it was like, ‘Oh!’ I was stunned, of course.”
The lucky man spent the next few days repeatedly staring at the ticket, letting the reality of his win sink in. It’s by far the largest prize of this Lottery enthusiast’s life. About 15 years ago, he purchased two identical Keno 5-spot tickets and hit all five numbers. He had added the Bonus option to his ticket, and a Doubler promotion that was running at the time combined to multiply his prize to $4,800.
The Montgomery County resident said he plans to use this prize to pay off his credit cards and build up his savings. The retailer that sold his 50x The Cash ticket is a winner as well. Fairland Market, located at 13318 Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring, will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize scratch-off in the game.
The 50x The Cash game launched in January, and four of its $100,000 top prizes are still unclaimed, along with seven $50,000 prizes, 19 $10,000 prizes and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000. A member of the Lottery’s Multiplier family of scratch-off games, the 50x The Cash game is joined by 5x The Cash, 10x The Cash, 20x The Cash and 100x The Cash.
