Straight Zeros on DEAL OR NO DEAL™ Scratch-off Surprises Mt. Airy Teacher

$50,000 winner moves to head of the class

A Carroll County teacher who spent over two decades enriching minds and grading papers scored four zeros on a recent project. Instead of signifying something was incomplete, the zeros were the equivalent of an A+ because they were part of an enriching $50,000 top prize on a DEAL OR NO DEAL™ scratch-off.

The 64-year-old Mt. Airy resident taught a full day of classes before being granted early dismissal for her trip to Baltimore to claim her prize. The winner, who calls herself “The Advocate,” told Lottery officials that her journey to the Winner’s Circle began two weeks earlier. She was treating herself to steamed crabs that day. While waiting for her order to steam, the scratch-off fan visited nearby Lottery retailer Paddock Wine & Spirits for another treat – a pair of DEAL OR NO DEAL scratch-offs!

Her magic moment happened as she scratched off the second instant ticket in the parking lot. She matched a winning number and then revealed the $50,000 top prize. The lucky instructor rushed back into the store and confirmed her exciting win with store clerks.

“The Advocate” told Lottery officials that although she has several years of teaching left before she considers retirement, she isn’t sure she’ll ever stop helping people. In fact, she plans to use the $50,000 prize as seed money for a pair of ventures aimed at helping people in her surrounding community.

“I had been planning these efforts for some time,” she said. “With the Lottery funds, I’ll be able to start now providing student tutoring resources and elder care for seniors with impairments.”

The Lottery retailer can also celebrate. In addition to selling the first $50,000 prize on the Lottery’s DEAL OR NO DEAL scratch-off, Paddock Wine & Spirits located at 7627 Woodbine Road in Woodbine will also earn a $500 retailer bonus from the Lottery.

The DEAL OR NO DEAL scratch-off, which launched in August, features more than $9 million in instant prizes including seven more top prizes of $50,000. In addition, players can enter non-winning DEAL OR NO DEAL scratch-offs into their My Lottery Rewards accounts for a second chance to win up to $50,000.
