Earl and April Summers of Frederick County enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving Bonus Match 5 win of $50,000.

Wife purchases Bonus Match 5 ticket for weary worker

A 53-year-old daily Bonus Match 5 player is thankful for his wife’s kindness after the ticket she bought for him on Thanksgiving Eve delivered a $50,000 top prize! Earl Summers Sr. of Brunswick normally buys his own tickets but April, his wife, stepped in to help.

“I was just really tired from work that night,” said Earl, a construction worker. “April went for me, but she didn’t go to my normal spot.”

“I just went around the corner,” she said. “I didn’t think it would make a difference.” Perhaps it did because Lottery luck was waiting for her at Jerry’s Liquor in Brunswick. Later that night, Earl checked the winning numbers using the Maryland Lottery app on his phone. Whoa, the couple was blown away by what they saw! All of the numbers drawn that night– 6, 7, 8, 9 and 23 – matched the last line of numbers on his $6 ticket.

“I had to look twice to make sure,” he said. “And then, I scanned the ticket to confirm the win was $50,000.”

“I was sitting right there with him” said April. “He almost jumped off the couch.”

A very excited Earl then called a good friend and co-worker who won big on the Lottery’s Keno game to find out what to do next. “He knows the routine,” said Earl, smiling.

The Frederick County man put the ticket in a safe. Because Lottery headquarters was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, he had several days to let realization of the win sink in and think about plans for the prize. The father of three grown children plans to use the winnings to buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, take April on a nice cruise and buy holiday gifts.

Also a winner was Jerry’s Liquor located at 30 Petersville Road in Brunswick. The Frederick County Lottery retailer earned a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket in the daily game.
