Salisbury man wins $100,000 top prize on $1,000 Frenzy scratch-off
It only took three visits to his local Maryland Lottery retailer for a 57-year-old avid scratch-off player to win the $100,000 top prize on the $1,000 Frenzy scratch-off.
Sam Brown of Salisbury loves his scratch-offs and plays them routinely. Last Friday, he was sitting home when the urge to play got him on his feet. He headed up to the Salisbury Crown gas station and purchased four instant tickets: two $5 games and two $10 games. One of the $10 scratch-offs was a $1,000 Frenzy instant ticket, which he noticed was among the first scratch-offs in the book.
“I took notice that the number of the ticket was two,” said the father of five. The Wicomico County resident tucked the games away and went home to play them.
Sam has a process when playing scratch-offs. He puts all winning games to one side and then will get another of the same instant ticket if he finds a non-winner. The first $1,000 Frenzy instant ticket was not a winner, so he returned to the Lottery retailer and purchased a couple more along with a few other scratch-offs.
“This time, I picked up the third and fourth ticket, both not winners,” Sam said. “I went back a third time and saw that someone bought the fifth ticket in the book, so I grabbed the sixth one.”
His persistence paid off! When he scratched the $1,000 Frenzy instant ticket this time, the grandfather of five revealed the $100,000 top prize.
“He threw down the ticket in front of me and said, ‘Tell me I didn’t just win $100,000!’ ” said Sam’s wife Valerie. “Then, he fell on the floor in tears.”
Once the couple calmed down, they shared their good news with their children. At first, Valerie put the winning scratch-off in a cabinet. She unnerved her husband, though, when she kept moving the lucky instant ticket.
“I came home and could not find it,” said Sam. “I almost lost my mind trying to find that ticket.”
A Food Lion employee who is on medical leave, Sam plans to pay bills with his prize. He then plans to give each of his children $1,000 and each of his grandchildren $100.
