Traveling home to Maryland to visit her family gives a New York woman plenty of chances to play lottery games as she passes through state after state. Her favorite state lotteries for scratch-offs, Mega Millions and Powerball tickets are Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania.
“I try my luck everywhere,” said the 50-year-old Brooklyn resident. She’s experienced small wins in the past, but nothing like the $10,000 top prize she nabbed on the Maryland Lottery’s 10x Cash scratch-off.
The lucky woman was visiting relatives in Prince George’s County in September when she stopped to buy gas, a soda and several scratch-offs at the Tantallon Exxon at 10815 Indian Head Highway in Fort Washington. She scratched off the instant tickets while sitting in her car and was shocked when she revealed the top-prize win on the $10 10x Cash game.
“I was just holding on to it tightly,” said the woman, who works as a medical secretary at a New York hospital. “I just couldn’t believe it.”
She called her mom, who also plays scratch-offs, and shared the great news. The lucky winner kept the ticket in her purse for weeks until she could return to Maryland and claim her prize. She plans to pay bills with the winnings and keep playing her favorite games.
