Wins $50,000 on Green and Gold Scratch-off
It all started on New Year’s Eve when Dewitt Barnhouse, Sr. of Poolesville scratched his left hand. That innocent scratch, according to his wife, was a sure sign that money was in his future. It turns out that money would indeed be coming to the retired roofer and he wouldn’t have to wait too long for it.
On the first day of 2010 Dewitt decided to visit a good friend who worked at a nearby store. While there he tried a few scratch-offs with mixed results, some winners and some not. As he was leaving he was $5 ahead and, on a whim, spent it on one last instant game, Green and Gold.
“I saw that matching number, the one with the $50,000 under it, and was shocked,” Mr. Barnhouse told officials. “I had to get my buddy to check the ticket for me before I believed it.” Dewitt hurried home to share the news with his wife and children and was met with the same reaction he himself experienced, shock and disbelief. “My son refused to believe it at first. Now he tells me that he’s had his eyes on a new set of golf clubs.”
Today’s winner and his wife plan to pass along much of their winnings to their children to help with bills and maybe purchase a car. When asked if he’d spend any of his winnings on himself he admitted that he and his wife had a few thoughts but they’ve never put too much stock in having lots of money. Mr. Barnhouse explained, “I adore my kids and, you know, you can’t take it with you.”
The winning Green and Gold scratch-off was purchased from JD’s Beer & Wine, located at 19710 Fisher Ave. in Poolesville.
