Visiting Family Brings Lottery Luck for Hampstead Woman

Annual reunion made extra special by $50,000 Powerball win

While she tries her Maryland Lottery luck every once in a while, a retired Carroll County business owner said it was a visit from relatives that made her recent $50,000 Powerball win possible.

“We had family in from all over,” the Hampstead woman recalled on June 24 as she visited Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore to claim her prize. “I was out with my granddaughter and decided to get her a scratch-off ticket – I know she enjoys them and buys them where she lives.”

She stopped at House of Liquors at 19 Carroll Plaza in Westminster on June 16 and picked out some instant tickets. Then, although she hadn’t planned it, she also bought a ticket for that night’s Powerball drawing for herself. Into her purse the Powerball ticket went, and back to the family reunion the pair went.

It was almost a week later that she was reminded of her spur-of-the-moment Powerball purchase.

“I was looking for something in my purse when I noticed the ticket,” she said. “I checked it on my husband’s Lottery app, and couldn’t believe my eyes.”

The lucky winner was initially convinced that she was being pranked before the truth finally hit her.

“I told my husband that this was amazing, a miracle,” she said, adding that the couple plans to use their winnings for a major home improvement project and a new car.

Powerball tickets are $2 and drawings are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights and can be seen at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV.
