Finds $5,000 and $50,000 wins a week apart at same retailer
A Germantown father of three who visits the same Maryland Lottery retailer once a week to buy scratch-off tickets has found the perfect day to play – Winner Wednesday!
The 7-Eleven employee stops at the Great Seneca Sunoco in Germantown at least weekly, he said, to play his favorite scratch-off games. Much to this loyal player’s surprise, he won $5,000 on a $20 scratch-off and the following week won the $50,000 top prize on a $5 Amazing 8s ticket. He looked at the winning scratch-off, he said, saw the prize and quietly left the store without telling anyone about his Lottery luck.
“It’s a wonderful thing,” said his wife, who accompanied him to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize. “He didn’t tell me right away either, it was two days later. He said ‘I have to go to Baltimore to redeem this there’ and I knew it was big.” She asked him how much he’d won and he urged her to guess. Her random guess, “Was it $50,000?” was correct. “You actually won $50,000?” she remembers saying to him, shocked and happy.
The Montgomery County resident said he selects different scratch-offs each time he visits the retailer located at 18001 Mateny Road. He picks different games and varies the price of tickets he selects. In the past, he’s won $500 and $1,000 on the games. He’s planning to keep making Wednesday purchases in hopes of returning to the Lottery Winners’ Lounge next week to claim another big prize!
His wife, who works for the U.S. Postal Service, doesn’t play scratch-offs but is happy her husband does! She’s getting a trip to her native South Korea, thanks to his win. One of their daughters is overseas teaching there and the visit will be a real treat. The couple also plans to make home improvements with the prize.
“I never knew that from the little (scratch-off) cards you could win this big,” she said, all smiles.
For selling the top-prize scratch-off in the Amazing 8s game, Great Seneca Sunoco will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery. The game is packed with more than 100,000 prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000 along with two more $50,000 top prizes and four $8,888 prizes.
