Susan and David Grinder, residents of the Frederick County community Point of Rocks, are all smiles after collecting their biggest-ever Lottery win, a $50,000 top prize on a Winning Streak scratch-off.
Susan and David Grinder are Lottery fans, pure and simple. The two make time each week to pick out scratch-offs and play them together, sharing the highs and lows that come with games of chance. It was one of those highs that brought them to Lottery headquarters this week to claim a $50,000 prize.
When their designated Lottery time was interrupted on a recent weekend by an unavoidable errand, David picked up a few tickets he could play while on the road, intending to call home to share the results. Thanks to a $5 Winning Streak game that was among those he chose, that call ended up being a lot more exciting than he expected.
“I couldn’t figure out what was going on at first, he sounded like he was freaking out,” Susan said March 9 when the two claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters. Part of the problem, David reported, was that his hands were shaking so much that he had trouble holding both his phone and the $50,000 top-prize-winning ticket. His purchase from the Exxon station at 5870 Ballenger Creek Pike in Frederick had him a bit rattled.
“I checked the ticket several times to be sure,” he said. “Then I asked the cashier to check it. She gave me a big hug. The whole experience was mind-blowing.”
The husband and wife from the Frederick community Point of Rocks said home improvement projects will be their focus when deciding how to enjoy their winnings.
“We’ve been giddy ever since Saturday,” Susan said. “I just can’t get over that his happened to us.”
Winning Streak debuted in early February with seven $50,000 top prize tickets in the mix. This Frederick County win is the first top prize to be claimed. Ballenger Creek Pike Exxon receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top prize winner. Along with the six remaining top prizes, 10 second-tier prizes of $5,000 each are still in circulation.
