$50,000 Scratch-Off Win Prompts Call to Sister Seeking Guidance

Baltimore man claims top prize in Diamond Mine X9 game

A longtime Maryland Lottery player from Baltimore was perfectly happy to play and win the occasional prize of a “couple dollars here and there” until April 7, when he bought a scratch-off that turned out to be worth $50,000.

“I scratched it in the store and didn’t know what to do, so I called my sister,” the player said. He bought the winning $5 Diamond Mine X9 instant ticket at Sam’s Lobby Shop in Baltimore City. His sister, who accompanied him to Lottery headquarters when he claimed his prize, said she wasn’t sure what to do either but they figured it out. The pair celebrated his top-prize win in the Lottery Winner’s Circle last week.

The anonymous 54-year-old winner said he plans to spend his windfall on home repairs and share some of the prize with his family. He also will continue playing his usual Pick 3 and Pick 4 combinations as well as buying the occasional scratch-off.

For selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Sam’s Lobby Shop at 10 North Calvert Street in Baltimore receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery. This game went on sale in February and still has five unclaimed $50,000 top prizes and 10 unclaimed $5,000 prizes.
