Abingdon Scratch-off Buy Brings $50,000 Win to Pennsylvania Player

Surprised Keystone state winner plans to save his prize

A Lottery player from Pennsylvania stopped by Constant Friendship Exxon in Abingdon recently and bought a $5 Deluxe Crossword instant ticket.

He scratched off the game right away and immediately realized he won a $50,000 top prize. “It was a big surprise,” said the resident of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

A regular Lottery player, the lucky man says he “likes it just for the fun of it.” Over the years, the 42-year-old has won prizes that keep playing interesting. Scores of $4,000 to $5,000 wins were his biggest prizes until he claimed the $50,000 award on Jan. 20 at Maryland Lottery headquarters.

Although very happy about the win, the lucky player has no celebrations planned nor any big plans for the money. He’s going to put the funds in savings, keep playing and hoping for another big win. “Play more and win more,” he said.

Also winning is the Exxon station at 3424 Emmorton Road in Abingdon, which receives a bonus equal to 1 percent of the prize. The Lottery awards a bonus of $500 to retailers selling $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-offs.

This sixth edition of the Deluxe Crossword game went on sale in June 2021 and has three more top prizes remaining. Players can also search for nine unclaimed $10,000 prizes and more than 590,000 prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000.
