Beginner’s Luck Yields Big Win for Baltimore Woman

Fell out of her chair after learning she won a $50,000 third-tier prize

A Baltimore resident and her sisters would often talk about what it would be like to win Powerball or Mega Millions and how, one day, they would try their luck. The novice decided that April 10 was her day to play Powerball for the first time and it turned out to be a very lucky one. She won a $50,000 third-tier prize!

The big winner said she had no idea how to play the Lottery, but decided to play anyway. That eventful Wednesday, she went to the Royal Farms store located at 4820 O’Donnell Street in Baltimore specifically to play Powerball and Mega Millions. She purchased two Mega Millions quick-pick tickets and one $4 Powerball quick-pick ticket.

“To be honest, I was unsure how to play,” she said, smiling. “I walked up to the vending machine and was confused a little.”

The novice made her purchases, put the tickets away and didn’t know she was a winner until a week later.

“I spilled some water in my bag and, as I was cleaning it out, I found the ticket,” said the winner. “I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I have this ticket to check.’”

The Baltimore City educator downloaded the Maryland Lottery app to her phone and scanned the ticket. To her surprise, the message said to “See Retailer.” She didn’t know what that meant, being new to playing Lottery games, so she Googled to get some answers. Afterward, she called one of her sisters for help.

“My sister looked up the winning numbers on the Lottery’s website,” said the new player. “She told me I only missed the jackpot by one number and that I won $50,000. I fell out my chair at work.”

The winner said the two women screamed and celebrated and then Googled again how to claim a Lottery prize. The married mother of young children shared the news with her husband, who, after confirming the win for himself, was thrilled that they could now afford a better daycare for their children.

The very lucky lady claimed the prize this week. She told Lottery officials she will also plan a family vacation with her $50,000 prize, make some home repairs and save some of the funds for her children.

Although the Powerball jackpot was recently hit, Maryland Powerball players are still in for a treat. During our Jackpot Reset promotion, players who buy a Powerball ticket now through April 21 might be awarded, at random, a free $2 Mega Millions ticket.
