Delaware Couple Cross the Border to Find $50,000 Bingo Win

Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off delivers top prize to happy couple

A bingo-loving couple from Delaware made a $50,000 Maryland memory when they tried their luck with a Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off. They were holiday shopping in Maryland last month when fate had them stop at a Royal Farms in Elkton for coffee.

The 75-year-old husband said they don’t normally get coffee from Royal Farms, but since they were in the area, they decided to buy the hot brew. While there, the 75-year-old wife purchased two $5 Gold Bar Bingo instant tickets.

“We love bingo,” she said. “Not only do we play the scratch-off, but we go to the hall and play, too.” The husband added, “I’m a bingo caller.”

When they finished shopping, the two returned to Delaware. While the wife scratched off the games, the husband put the final touches on their holiday decorations. She noticed something odd when she scratched one of the instant tickets and asked him to come take a look.

“I called him because something looked weird,” she said. “He looked at it and confirmed the win for me.”

“She thought it was only $25,000,” said the husband. “I almost had a heart attack when I saw it was really $50,000.”

The lucky great-grandparents locked the winning scratch-off in a safe and made an appointment to claim the prize in December. However, due to a Covid-19 scare, they had to quarantine and rescheduled their appointment for 2023. When sharing their story with Lottery officials, the retired couple said they have no plans for their prize yet and will put the money in the bank.

Also celebrating in the win is Royal Farms #101 located at 1199 East Pulaski Highway in Elkton. The Cecil County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
