Essex Mom ‘Flabbergasted’ by Gift of $50,000-Winning Scratch-off

Initially suspected winning Gold Rush 7s Tripler instant ticket was a prank

A Baltimore County woman who received a scratch-off as a gift from her daughter is not a regular player, which accounts for her initial disbelief that she won a $50,000 top prize in the Gold Rush 7s Tripler game.

The Essex resident scratched off the $5 instant ticket but had no idea she had won anything. Her daughter then pointed out a match with the winning number 01, adding that beneath the 01 in the play area was a $50,000 prize. The winner recalls thinking her daughter was playing a joke on her.

“I said to her, ‘Are you sure it is real?'” questioned the retired sales associate. The mother and daughter went to a Lottery retailer, where they scanned the instant ticket and confirmed the win.

“I was flabbergasted,” the mother said, recalling the moments following her realization that the scratch-off win was authentic. She is undecided on how she will spend her prize.

Her daughter said she doesn’t like giving scratch-offs as gifts because it is possible to give away a winning instant ticket. However, she is very happy for her mom. “She deserves it because she is my mom and she has done a lot for me,” the daughter said with a smile.

Her mother was not the only winner. The Baltimore City Royal Farms at 2704 Washington Boulevard, which sold the lucky instant ticket, received a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

The Gold Rush is on as a new family of five scratch-offs — $1 Gold Rush 7s, $2 Gold Rush 7s Doubler, $5 Gold Rush 7s Tripler, $10 Gold Rush 7s Multiplier and $20 Gold Rush 777 — went on sale on May 20. Top prizes on these games range from $1,000 to $1 million. This is the first top prize won on the Gold Rush 7s Tripler game. Seven $50,000 top prizes are still unclaimed, along with others ranging from $5 to $5,000.
