A Catonsville man says his first-ever Maryland Lottery purchase turned into a $50,000 win on a $5 Mosaic Money scratch-off.
The self-described Lottery skeptic said April 7 after he claimed his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore he decided to try his luck after witnessing another customer cash in a sizable prize at a gas station.
After redeeming a $400 winning ticket at the Liberty Shell gas station at 8200 Liberty Road in Milford Mill, that winner gave the Catonsville man $5, which he used to purchase a scratch-off for his wife, who often encourages him to play Lottery games.
“I bought the ticket for my wife,” he said.
He brought the ticket home to surprised his wife after dinner. Later that evening they scratched it together and quickly realized they were holding a $50,000 winner.
“I was like, ‘What is this?’” the player said. When he claimed the prize, he was accompanied by his wife, whom he calls his “lucky charm.”
The couple said they plan to use the winnings toward a down payment on a home.
As for playing again, the winner said he is one and done. He described the win as a “miracle blessing” and said he has no plans to play again.
The Mosaic Money scratch-off is a $5 game and was introduced a little more than a year ago in March of 2025, featuring eight top prizes of $50,000. There are three top prizes remaining unclaimed after the Catonsville man’s win.
Liberty Shell will receive $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
