Plans to purchase a home, pay for kids’ college with prize

A $500,000 Powerball Double Play win sent a Frederick County “Super Mom’s” spirits soaring. The anonymous winner won the second-tier prize in the Sept. 25 Double Play drawing.

“I couldn’t breathe, I was hyperventilating and I was in shock. It doesn’t feel real,” said “Super Mom,” recalling the moments after her win was revealed.

The Western Maryland resident has been a loyal Powerball player since 2021 and always purchases the Double Play option for the extra $1. Double Play is a second drawing that occurs 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing. Players can add the feature to Powerball tickets for $1. The same set of numbers are used in both drawings.

She usually has a set of personal numbers for Powerball purchases, but on Sept. 25, she let the terminal quick-pick the digits. Those quick-pick numbers gave her the $500,000 prize.

“I like the numbers that came out,” said the big winner, with a smile. “I am just so grateful,” added “Super Mom.”

She plans to use the prize to purchase a new home and wants to save for her kids’ college educations.

“Super Mom” bought the winning ticket at Wawa, located at 5440 Urbana Pike in Frederick. The Frederick County retailer received a $1,000 bonus for selling the second-tier winning Double Play ticket. This was the sixth winning Double Play ticket sold in Maryland in 2024 and the largest prize to date.
