Friday the 13th Becomes Luckiest Day Ever for Oxon Hill Man

Prince George’s County player brings home $100,000 Pick 5 win

An Oxon Hill resident is taking back his negative association of Friday the 13th because he played Pick 5 that day and won $100,000. He can thank a series of text messages and luck for his big win.

Agreeing to use his first name for publicity purposes, Clarence said he is a faithful player of Pick games. On Dec. 13, he was feeling lucky and decided to play a set of numbers that kept coming up in his text messages. He stopped at Modern Liquors in Temple Hills that morning to play his regular pick games including Pick 5.

The big winner played 50403 on a $1 straight bet for the Dec. 13 midday and evening drawings and purchased two separate tickets. He bought a couple of Box tickets as well. Later that night, he checked his tickets and was in for one huge surprise. On a day that’s considered unlucky by some, Clarence’s numbers matched for a $50,000 win on each ticket in the midday drawing.

“I just started hollering,” said Clarence. “I knew what I saw, but I still didn’t believe it.”

The retired federal government employee decided to scan his tickets to confirm the big $100,000 combined win. He also won $1,200 on his Box bets. A perceived unlucky day turned out to be a very lucky day for Clarence.

The Prince George’s County resident has only shared the news with a friend. When visiting Lottery headquarters to claim the big prize, he told Lottery officials that he planned to pay bills with his windfall and will use some funds toward an already planned birthday trip next month.

Also a winner is Modern Liquors, located at 2358 Iverson Street in Temple Hills. The Lottery retailer will receive a combined $1,000 Lottery bonus for selling two $50,000-winning Pick 5 tickets.
