An Edgewater man and Maryland Lottery scratch-off enthusiast found himself on a bit of a lottery hiatus. After going without playing for a while, a trip to the grocery store rekindled his interest. With a few dollars to spare, he bought a Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off ticket that happened to be a $50,000 top-prize winner.
He shared his story of winning Aug. 11 after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
He bought his ticket at the Safeway grocery store at 7605 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. The ticket selection not inspired by anything in particular, and he bought only a single $5 ticket.
When he scanned the ticket he saw the message: “SEE LOTTERY,” and he was quite surprised. He was even more shocked after scanned the ticket on the Maryland Lottery app on his phone and saw the amount of his win: $50,000.
He said he had to just sit inside his car for 15 minutes to collect his thoughts. After regaining his composure, he called and shared the news with his fiancée and his mother.
The Anne Arundel County man works in lawn and tree care. He plans to add his winnings to saving for a house.
The Safeway that sold the winning ticket receives a $500 bonus, equal to 1% of the $50,000 prize.
