Homework Helps D.C. Woman Win $250,000 Maryland Lottery Prize

Washington, D.C. resident’s research pays off as she takes home a $250,000 Money Bags scratch-off top prize.

Though out of school for many years, a retired Washington, D.C. woman remembered well the value of study. She put this to work to aid her Lottery selections and earlier this week found a $250,000 top-prize Money Bags scratch-off ticket.

“I use the Lottery’s website to see which games still have a lot of big prizes,” the once-a-week player told officials on Wednesday. “I pick one and buy it whenever I get my tickets.” This homework pointed her to Money Bags, a $10 instant game that debuted in February with five top prizes. Her research found that all five of those $250,000 winning tickets were still available. “I’d get two of them every time I played and I did pretty well. I even won $100 a couple of times.”

Monday afternoon found her in DMV Convenience & Wireless in Temple Hills. “I scratched my two Money Bags games out in the car and right away saw a $50,000 match.” As excited as she’s ever been, the D.C. resident told us that she rushed home to share the news with her family. They were thrilled for her, of course, but even more so when they pointed out that she hadn’t finished scratching the ticket.

Wouldn’t you know it, she found four more $50,000 matches. At that moment she became the first to win a Money Bags $250,000 top prize.

DMV Convenience & Wireless at 3173 Branch Avenue also have reason to celebrate as they earned a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winner.

Money Bags lists four more top prizes as well as two $50,000 second-tier prizes among the more than 400,000 winning tickets still in stores.

Our latest big winner, who claimed the title “Ms. Money Bags” for the purposes of this story, will pay bills, share with her family and put the rest of her winnings in the bank.
