Howard County Woman Shocked by $100,000 Top-Prize Win

Nurse’s calculated approach to playing scratch-offs pays off

A lucky Elkridge resident was floored after revealing a $100,000 top-prize win on a $100,000 Ca$h scratch-off. Her scratch-off research paid off with the biggest prize of her life.

The anonymous winner, who is going by the nickname “Meks” to tell her story, stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters on Nov. 7 to claim her prize. The nurse found her lucky $30 scratch-off at Rainbow Gas Station and Convenience Store in Hyattsville, where she stopped to fill up her car with gas and buy her weekly supply of Lottery games.

The Howard County resident usually buys multiple scratch-offs in the same game or in two games, depending on how new they are or her chances of winning. To check the start dates of the instant tickets and chances of winning, “Meks” uses her My Lottery Rewards mobile app.

The 41-year-old claims her research has earned her big results. “I always seem to win even if it’s not much but the most I’ve won was $5,000.” “Meks” was in disbelief, not about winning, but about the size of her $100,000 prize.

“$100,000 in my hands is something I could have never imagined, even though I play so often.”

As for how she will spend her windfall, the lucky mom plans to share her fortune to bless others. She also will put some funds aside for herself and invest money to aid her children when they are older.

Her lucky Lottery retailer, Rainbow Gas Station and Convenience Store, can share in her good fortune. The store located at 5801 Riggs Road in Hyattsville receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

The $100,000 Ca$h game went into circulation on Sept. 18. There are still 61 $100,000 top prizes available along with others ranging from $30 to $5,000.
