Late Husband’s ZIP Code Yields $50K Pick 5 Win for Germantown Woman

A Germantown woman said her late husband must have been smiling after she won $50,000 playing the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 game using his old postal code.

The retired federal worker purchased a $1 straight bet ticket and won on the Jan. 8 midday drawing with the number 20871.

“That was my husband’s ZIP code,” she said, referring to the Clarksburg area.

Her husband recently passed away and she had been playing that five-digit combination for only a few months. She said she was home checking tickets on her phone when it revealed she had a perfect match.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was so happy when I saw that,” said the Montgomery County resident.

The big winner said Jan. 9 when she claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters she is undecided on how she will spend her winnings.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Liberty gas station at 23300 Clarksburg Road in Clarksburg. The store receives a $500 bonus for selling the ticket.
