Lottery Enthusiast from Salisbury Scratches for a Second Big Win: $100,000

A passionate Maryland Lottery player from Salisbury made the trek to Baltimore Sept. 10 to claim a $100,000 top prize on the $100,000 Crossword 8th Edition scratch-off, marking her second big Lottery prize.

She recalled after claiming her winnings that she won a $10,000 prize more than a decade ago.

“I love the bingo and crosswords. That’s what I won on both times,” she said.

Her favorite location for buying Lottery tickets is the Ocean Stop at the Valero gas station at 27430 Ocean Gateway in Hebron because “he has the best selection.” That’s where she bought the $100,000 winner.

The purchase came about because she noticed the 9th edition of the $100,000 Crossword made its debut on Aug. 20 but there were still some 8th edition tickets available at that location. She bought the 8th edition version of the game, but she didn’t find out it was a big winner until that evening after a day of running errands.

Scratching her tickets, she said, “is my calm relaxation when I get home.”

A retired registered nurse, the winner says playing Lottery scratch-offs is her hobby and she gets a lot of enjoyment out of it. She identifies her budget for buying tickets as her “fun money,” and she keeps track of the odds and prizes claimed on tickets using the Lottery’s scratch-off page.

“I don’t travel. I don’t buy luxury goods. I don’t need a new car,” she said, adding, “I have everything I want.”

As for what she will do with her winnings, she said: “I’ve got no plans. I’m just going to enjoy it!”

Also having a little to enjoy is the Wicomico County Lottery retailer who sold the winning ticket. They will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off.
