A new Ocean City resident made the trip back to her old stomping grounds recently, stopped in at a Brooklyn Park convenience store and walked out with a $50,000 Maryland Lottery win. Her top prize win on the $5 Break The Bank scratch-off is the latest – and largest – in the player’s long history of lottery success.
“I use lucky numbers,” the retired retail associate said Oct. 9 when she claimed her winnings at Lottery headquarters. “Whichever game is in my lucky number box, that’s the one I play.”
Lottery retailers routinely display their scratch-off tickets in numbered boxes.
The Worchester County woman, who plays almost every day, said she’s won as much as $5,000 on three occasions using this method. Her lucky numbers are not chosen randomly, she continued. “They’re all taken from important family dates.”
The number that delivered her $50,000 win is connected to a relative who recently died.
“It feels like she helped it happen,” the emotional woman told officials. “I was sitting outside after I scratched the ticket and a butterfly landed on the table right in front of me. I know it sounds silly, but I saw meaning in that.”
Break The Bank showed up in retailers’ numbered display boxes back in August. The Ocean City player’s top prize win leaves five $50,000 prizes in circulation along with seven $5,000 second-tier prizes.
Charlie Wards, lottery retailer in this story, is at 4607 4th Street in Brooklyn Park. The Anne Arundel County business receives a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning ticket.
