Clifford Briggs of Silver Spring scored his biggest lottery prize to date: a $100,000 win on the $10 Double Your Money scratch-off.
Clifford Briggs, a retired railroad worker from Silver Spring, is on the fast track to riches. The two-time retiree – he’s also an Army veteran – bought six Double Your Money scratch-offs and one of them turned out to be a $100,000 top-prize winner.
He claimed the prize Aug. 29 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore where he told his winning story. He made a stop a few days previously at the Safeway supermarket at 11201 Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. After buying groceries, he made a stop at the lottery kiosk to try his luck.
He began scratching his tickets once he arrived home. Before scratching the ticket in its entirety and seeing the total amount won, he began calling family and friends and sharing news of matching numbers. After seeing his first matching number for the corresponding $10,000 he thought that was it. Little did he know that he would have to share such news again once he saw a second matching number for $10,000.
But then he realized he should just scratch the entire ticket. When it was all said and done, his ticket showed a $100,000 top-prize winner, 10 times what he initially thought.
In disbelief, he made a copy of the ticket and took it to a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store to scan it. When he saw the message telling him he won a $100,000 prize, he said to himself, “I guess it’s real.”
Over the years he’s won several smaller prizes between Maryland lottery and casinos, but this is his biggest single prize to date.
The Montgomery County resident plans to use his winnings to pay off the car, then he’ll put the rest in savings. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, golfing and playing card games with friends.
Safeway supermarket will get to collect a $1,000 bonus as the retailer that sold a winning scratch-off ticket worth $100,000.
Double Your Money was launched this past July beginning with 14 top-tier prizes at the $100,000 level. After this win, there are 10 remaining, along with many other prizes.
