Lucky Pasadena Player Nabs Ca$h Series’ First $50,000 Top Prize

Ronald Robbins of Pasadena plans to retire debt free after winning $50,000 playing the Cold Hard Ca$h scratch-off game.

Cold Hard Ca$h scratch-off delivers big win

A grocery store employee who is an occasional Lottery player bagged the first top prize on one of the new $5 Ca$h Series scratch-off games. Ronald Robbins of Pasadena purchased five of the instant tickets on Saturday after working his overnight shift and scratched his way to a win.

The Anne Arundel County resident found his Lottery luck waiting at EZ Quick Food Market in Pasadena. The Giant grocery employee stopped in the market for a few items and, while there, decided to purchase five of the Ca$h Series scratch-offs because the game was new. The 67-year-old took the scratch-offs home to play.

Many Lottery players scratch the barcode on the instant games first and scan the scratch-offs to see if they are winners. This is the method that Ronald chose, too. The very first instant ticket he scanned using the Lottery app on his smartphone showed a winning message.

“I wasn’t fazed by it at first, because sometimes there’s a fluke in the system,” said the winner. “But, all of the other tickets said ‘Not a winner’ and when I went back to the first one, it still said the same winning message.”

Ronald decided to scratch off the entire instant ticket to check for a win. When he did, one of his numbers matched a winning number and showed a $50,000 top prize. Excited, but still needing sleep, the winner decided not to wake his wife with the news. He took a picture of the winning instant ticket on his phone, texted it to her and went to sleep. When he awoke, he told his wife to check her phone.

“She said, ‘I get some of this, right?’” recalled the winner, smiling at the memory.

The father and grandfather shared news of his good fortune with his family and made an appointment with the Lottery to claim his prize. Ronald told Lottery officials that he plans to pay off all of his debt with his winnings so that he can retire debt free. He also planned to celebrate the big win with his wife.

The Ca$h Series scratch-off game carries four cash-themed scenes: Cold Hard Ca$h, Crazy Ca$h, Spicy Ca$h and Ultimate Ca$h. There are still seven top prizes remaining along with 13 $5,000 prizes, 24 $1,000 prizes and more than 994,000 others ranging from $5 to $500.

EZ Quick Food Market located at 231 Mountain Road in Pasadena is also celebrating the win. The store management will receive a $500 bonus for selling a $50,000 winning top-prize scratch-off.
