‘Proud Marylander’ looking forward to retirement
The largest of the Mega Millions prizes won in Maryland during the recent billion-dollar run – a $4 million second-tier hit – was claimed Aug. 11 by a player from Montgomery County.
The player, for whom anonymity is a high priority, self-identified as a “Proud Marylander,” who is on the verge of retirement thanks to the big win.
The Lobby Shop at 1 North Charles Street in Baltimore, which sold the winning ticket, receives a bonus of $5,000. The usual Mega Millions second-tier retailer bonus is $2,500, but this ticket included the Megaplier option, which costs $1 extra, and increased a $1 million regular prize to $4 million, and doubled the retailer bonus.
The win highlights the importance of checking Lottery tickets, even if the big prize is not hit. In both Mega Millions and Powerball the second-tier base prize is $1 million and the third-tier prize on both games is a five-digit score.
During the recent Mega Millions run, which ended when a ticket sold in Florida matched all the drawn numbers on Aug. 7 for a $1.58 billion jackpot, Maryland saw a total of 29 prizes of $10,000 or more. Of those, the $4 million claimed Aug. 11 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore was the largest, but there were two at the $1 million level, one for $40,000 and three at the $20,000 level.
As of Aug. 11, eight of these substantial prizes remained unclaimed, including the lone $40,000 win. The unclaimed winning tickets are:
