Two coworkers said they do it for fun, when asked about the $50,000 Powerball prize they were claiming at Lottery headquarters on Nov. 4. They’ve bought tickets together for years and have enjoyed many winning moments, but nothing compared to their big win last month.
“I like to imagine what I’d do if I won the jackpot, just like everybody else,” one of the Montgomery County residents explained. The other Powerball fan followed with, “Even though the odds say that you’ll never win big, it does happen. But it will definitely never happen to you if you don’t have a ticket.”
They take turns buying tickets, making sure to have one for every Powerball drawing with each contributing to the cost. They coordinate the purchases based on their schedules. “If I know I’ll be near a lottery store tonight with my family, I’ll get our tickets for the next few drawings. And vice versa.”
The $50,000 win on Oct. 7 came as quite a shock, one winner said. “I checked the results on my Lottery app. Then I checked again, three more times.” A call to his lottery partner was met with utter disbelief.
“I was eventually able to erase all doubts, or so I thought,” he continued. It seems that even almost a month later, his coworker still hadn’t bought in. “When we handed over the ticket to the claims official, I saw the worry in his eyes, expecting that it was all a mistake and the ticket would be handed back to us.”
The lucky pair will split the prize. Their plans for the winnings include a new vehicle, adding to savings and sharing their good fortune with family and church. The $50,000 Powerball ticket was purchased from Shuvam Beer & Wine at 10313 Westlake Drive in Bethesda.
