New Jersey Man Visiting Relatives in Maryland Wins $50,000 Powerball Prize

A New Jersey man visiting relatives in Maryland was out for a walk in the park with his nephews Aug. 30 when it occurred to him he should buy a ticket for the Powerball drawing that evening. The jackpot, after all, was at $950 million.

He didn’t win the big prize – the jackpot would continue growing until it hit $1.787 billion in the Sept. 6 drawing – but he did match five out of six numbers for a $50,000 prize.

“You never know,” he said several times Sept. 8, smiling all the while, after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

He bought five quick pick combinations for a total of $10 at Mundo Market at 5000 Edgewood Road in College Park.

“That’s when luck struck,” he said.

The happy winner hadn’t thought much about what he would be doing with the extra money.

He is confident, however, that he will be buying lottery tickets again in the future because, “you never know.”
