Prince George’s County Woman Strikes Big with $50,000 Scratch-off Win

A Prince George’s County Lottery player is celebrating a $50,000 win after scratching her way to a top prize on a Big Money ticket.

The lucky winner, who chose to go by the name Candy for this story, has been playing the Lottery since its inception. She stopped by the Shell station at 8555 Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Lanham to fill up her gas tank and picked up a $5 Big Money scratch-off while in line.

“I got back to my car and decided to scratch it right then and there,” Candy said. “I thought I saw something but I wasn’t sure, so I went to another store to check it.”

She scanned the ticket at the Lottery kiosk and saw that it was a winner, but didn’t see how much it was worth. Doubting her eyes and assuming it might be a mistake, Candy asked a store clerk to scan the ticket.

“There was no mistake,” she laughed. “It was worth $50,000!”

When asked what she plans to do with her windfall, Candy didn’t hesitate: “I’d love to donate to charity after I take myself on a well-deserved vacation to Jamaica!”

In addition to Candy’s big win, the retailer that sold the winning scratch-off ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
