Random Pick 5 Purchase Gives Joppa Woman a $50,000 Prize

Extra $5 helps secure lucky ticket purchase

A Harford County grocery shopper turned $5 in change into a $50,000 Pick 5 prize.

While at Walmart #2045 in Nottingham, the Joppa woman realized she had an extra $5. She also had a feeling she should purchase a game from the Lottery vending machine. The anonymous player explained that she usually purchases a scratch-off when she has a random urge to play, but was enticed to a Pick 5 ticket for the Feb. 9 evening drawing. She made the purchase and forgot about the $1 quick-pick ticket over the weekend.

“I didn’t check it until Monday. When I saw that I had won, I said, ‘No way,'” the retired banker noted.

She looked at her ticket, which carried the winning numbers of 47967 for the Feb. 9 drawing. The dubious winner scanned the ticket three times at a Lottery retailer to verify her big win.

“Each time, it came up $50,000. I had to make sure it was real,” she said with a smile.

She is no stranger to winning, claiming $5,000 on a scratch-off last year. The loyal player plans to use this prize for home renovations.

Walmart #2045 at 8118 Perry Hill Road in Baltimore County is also a winner. For selling a $50,000 winning Pick 5 ticket, the Nottingham retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery.
