A man recently retired from the State of Maryland has a little something extra to add to his retirement fund after winning $150,000 playing the More Money scratch-off. The winner wasted no time claiming the big prize on Jan. 22.
It was just the day before, on Jan. 20, when good fortune shined on the Baltimore City resident. He was early for a medical appointment and decided to stop to pick up some breakfast. Still with some time to kill, he decided to drop in the Soda Pop Shop in Catonsville to play a few Lottery games. Among his purchases were two $10 More Money scratch-off games. He opted to scratch the prize check and simply scan while still in the store. What he saw on the second ticket still has him overwhelmed.
“When I saw that message that said $150,000 win, I had to take a step back to process it,” he said Jan. 21 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters. “It said the same thing when I scanned it again and I just started walking in circles.”
Shocked and feeling out of sorts, the winner said he lost his appetite and couldn’t compose himself to go to his medical appointment.
“I was hungry, but I couldn’t eat,” he smiled. “And, I called and postponed my appointment; there’s no way I could go.”
He then called his son to share the good news.
“I said, ‘Hey dad, how are you?’” the son related. He accompanied his dad Jan. 22 to make the claim. “He responded, ‘I’m feeling wonderful, right now because I just won $150,000!’”
“I thought he was kidding at first, but could tell by his tone that he was serious,” added the son.
Once home, the big winner shared the news with his fiancée and then scheduled his appointment to claim the prize. He shared with Lottery officials that he retired in September 2025 and plans to save the winnings, adding the prize money to his retirement fund and will “see how it goes.”
Celebrating this win is also the retailer that sold the top prize-winning ticket. The Soda Pop Shop at 1026 Ingleside Avenue in Catonsville receives a $1,000 bonus.
The More Money scratch-off, that launched nearly a year ago, still has two $150,000 top prizes remaining. It also has 13 prizes at the $10,000 level up for grabs. In addition, there are many other decent prizes out there ranging from $10 to $5,000.
