Retired Educator from Silver Spring Claims $100,000 Lottery Prize

A Silver Spring woman who has been playing Maryland Lottery since its inception just landed her biggest lottery win. She bought a pair of $10 Double Your Money scratch-offs and one of them happened to contain a $100,000 top-prize.

The Montgomery County resident bought her ticket at Food Stop Mini at 4820 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville. She has an affinity for the number 13 and that’s what steered her towards her $100,000 payday, she said Aug. 15 after claiming her prize at Lottery headquarters. The ticket itself wasn’t the attraction. It was that the ticket was in the 13 spot in the display case.

After buying two tickets, she went to her car and scratched them.

“This can’t be right,” she remembers saying to herself. She revealed a “2X” symbol with $50,000 but couldn’t believe what she saw and decided to go back in the store and scan the ticket. Sure enough, the machine confirmed a $100,000 win.

She sat on the ticket for three weeks before making her way to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize. The winner is retired after 23 years in the education field. She has no plans for her winnings aside from taking care of family.

Food Stop Mini also has a reason to celebrate as the store receives a $1,000 bonus, equal to 1% of the prize.

The Silver Spring educator won the first of 14 top prizes at the $100,000 level on the Double Your Money ticket. The game is relatively new, having launched in July. In addition to the 13 unclaimed top prizes, two second tier wins at the $50,000 level are still in the wild, along with tens of thousands of other lower tier prizes.
