Delaware man wins $50,000 on VIP Club scratch-off
An out-of-state player just put Delmar, Md. back on the Maryland Lottery winner’s map after a series of scratch-off purchases led him to a $50,000 prize.
The Delaware man stopped at a truck stop in Delmar and spent $20 on a scratch-off that turned out to be a $500 winner. He took the game to Thirsty’s, which is a Wicomico County Lottery retailer located at 9534 Ocean Highway in Delmar, to cash in the scratch-off and collect his prize.
The 65-year-old used some of his new fortune to buy three more instant tickets. He bought two $20 scratch-offs and a $30 VIP Club instant ticket. Out of those three games, one carried a $40 prize and the VIP Club scratch-off delivered a $50,000 second-tier prize.
Happy and excited, the Millsboro, Delaware resident phoned his wife to share the great news. She just could not believe that he won!
The scratch-off fan has worked in the life insurance field doing retirement planning for the past 30 years. While he would love to retire, he told Lottery officials, the prize would need a few more zeros to allow that to happen. He plans to use his windfall for a needed septic system upgrade for his home. He also hopes to purchase some land and perhaps a new house.
When he’s not planning someone else’s retirement or playing Lottery games, the happy winner enjoys taking his boat out on the water and catching fish.
The $30 VIP Club instant ticket went on sale in February 2021 with five $2 million top prizes and eight $50,000 prizes along with more than 1.2 million others ranging from $30 to $5,000.
