Clayton Webb, of North Carolina, bought a Maryland Lottery FAST PLAY ticket worth $50,000 when he was between truck driving assignments in College Park.
After a quick $50,000 win, a North Carolina man has a new favorite state lottery.
“Well that’s a no brainer. Maryland!” he said when asked which state has the best lottery.
A long-haul trucker who delivers in nine states, Clayton Webb enjoys playing lottery games on his travels. On July 1, he made a delivery in Silver Spring and ended up needing to spend the night in College Park. He went from his motel room to a nearby Wawa convenience store at 10050 Baltimore Avenue, put $5 in a Lottery vending machine and selected the FAST PLAY game Double Win.
He studied the ticket briefly and realized it was a $50,000 winner.
“I folded it and put it in my pocket,” he said July 2 after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “No need to play any more after that.”
His previous personal best lottery wins were $5,000 on a ticket from his home state and $1,000 on a Tennessee Lottery ticket.
After claiming his prize on the morning of July 2, it was back to the road. Clayton had a solid nine hours of driving ahead of him before reaching his destination in North Carolina.
The timing of his win was fortuitous. The engine on his lawn mower recently blew out and needs to be replaced. It’s a bigger than usual expenditure, as he cuts grass on 52 acres.
“When I’m not driving a truck, I’m on my tractor,” he said.
Clayton plans to continue playing the Lottery from time to time, as has been his practice. “I play a little bit. I don’t overdo it,” he said. Sharing in his good fortune is the Wawa store where he bought the winning ticket, which receives a bonus of $500.
The Double Win game has 13 remaining top tier prizes at the $50,000 level and tens of thousands more ranging from $5 to $5,000.
