Virginia Man Finds His $50,000 Lottery Fortune in Maryland

It was a family visit that caused a resident of Alexandria, Va., to cross the Potomac into Maryland back in September. And while that trip was a happy one, his latest journey across the river was fun in a different way thanks the $50,000 lottery win he was coming to collect.

“I try my luck every week, either scratch-offs or the casino at National Harbor,” the maintenance supervisor said Oct. 3 when he collected his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. While he wins often, he reported, there’s never been a win that approached the $50,000 top prize he uncovered scratching a $5 Cash Scratch Fever ticket he purchased from AJ Liquors in Brentwood.

The close proximity of his Maryland relatives’ home to AJ Liquors is the factor that put him in the right lottery retailer, but it was happy memories of a string of wins he enjoyed with the $5 game a few months ago that closed the deal.

“I hadn’t played Cash Scratch Fever in a long time because my luck with it seemed to run out,” the winner said. “I thought maybe it had built back up, so I bought one.”

The winner says his top-prize win’s new home will be in his savings account.

“I have wanted to build up my savings these last few years but never seemed to put enough aside to have an impact. Now I can rest a little easier,” he elaborated.

AJ Liquors is at 3801 Bladensburg Road. The Prince George’s County business receives  a $500 bonus for selling the $50,000 top prize-winning ticket. Four more top prizes await Cash Scratch Fever players, as well as 11 second-tier winners at the $5,000 level.
