Western Maryland Man Wins $100,000 Scratch-off Prize

A Washington County man told Lottery officials that he was one rule when playing the Lottery. Staying true to that rule, however, was difficult when he stepped up to the counter last week. His decision to stick to the same routine resulted in a $100,000 win.

“The most I usually spend on a scratch-off is $20, but I decided to splurge,” the retired county employee said while claiming his prize on June 16. He had his eyes on a $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off, a game that costs $50. The instant ticket fan shared his rule with us – and his dilemma became clear. “The problem is that I always, always, always buy two of the same game. Every time.”

He continued, “I’d been thinking about it for a couple of days, so I was ready.” When he walked into Wooden Keg Liquors in Hagerstown that day he had $100 in his pocket.

Later at home, after winning his money back on his first $5,000,000 Fortune ticket, the Western Maryland man realized his heart was picking up speed as he scratched the second. “I kept uncovering $5,000 matches. There were so many of them. They just kept adding up.” All the way up to $100,000.

He tells us that the experience was an emotional one. “Any financial questions I had about my retirement were answered, with enough left over to share.”

Wooden Keg Liquors can be found at 20219 Jefferson Boulevard in Hagerstown. All three of $5,000,000 Fortune’s $5 million top prizes are still unclaimed. Six more $100,000 second-tier and eight $50,000 third-tier prizes are also still in circulation. The $50 ticket debuted in February.
