$50,000 Bonus Match 5 Win Shocks Retired Frostburg Cop

Claims top prize in Aug. 17 drawing

Ever since he retired from law enforcement, an Allegany County man has started each day with a walk. He purposely selects a route that takes him past convenience stores so he can add a cup of coffee and a few Lottery tickets to his morning routine.

Nothing was routine last Thursday, however, when Lady Luck stopped by as the Frostburg resident checked his previous day’s tickets using his Lottery app.

“I’d only had a few sips of my coffee when I saw what looked like a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 win,” said the husband, father and grandfather. “I knew it wasn’t correct, so I put my phone down, took a deep breath and finished my coffee. I wanted to clear my head so when I checked it again my eyes wouldn’t play the same trick.”

When he picked up his phone, it turned out that the coffee hadn’t changed a thing. “It was a real shock.”

Wanting to share his good news, the 62-year-old rushed home to awaken his wife, explaining that he had something serious to discuss. She was alarmed, thinking that something terrible had happened.

“When I calmed her down and told her, she at first didn’t believe, then she got excited. We tried to keep it down because our grandkids were sleeping over. We were unsuccessful.”

They plan to use their $50,000 prize from the Aug. 17 drawing to pay bills, increase their savings and spoil their grandchildren. No word on what the owners of Sheetz #062 at 401 East Main Street in Frostburg will do with its $500 bonus. The Lottery is awarding the bonus to the Allegany County store for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket.
