$50,000 Powerball Ticket Resurfaces While Cleaning out the Car

Philadelphia resident passing through Maryland wins $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize.

A Philadelphia resident, who goes by the nickname Philly Jawn, is celebrating a $50,000 Powerball win after a forgotten ticket nearly ended up in the trash. The lucky winner stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters on June 13 to claim his prize and share his story.

The nickname Philly Jawn is a tribute to the city of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, the commonly-used slang “jawn” can refer to any person, place, thing or event. It can be used when someone doesn’t want to use the exact name of something, which perfectly represents our winner’s wishes to remain anonymous.

The busy engineer, whose job keeps him traveling frequently, made a quick stop at Woodlawn Mart at 1818 Woodlawn Drive in Baltimore County on June 4 to grab snacks for his drive home. On a whim, he decided to purchase a handful Lottery tickets, including the $50,000 third-tier winning Powerball ticket.

More than a week later, while cleaning out his car, he came across the bag of tickets he had nearly thrown away. Using the Maryland Lottery app, he scanned the tickets and was shocked to discover one was worth $50,000.

“I was ecstatic when I realized I won,” he said. “I hope this is the first of many wins.”

He shared that he’s been playing the Lottery for about four years, often selecting numbers with personal significance like family birthdays. Though he hasn’t yet told his family or friends about his win, he admitted he was too excited to keep it to himself much longer.

As for the prize money, Philly Jawn plans to pay off bills and save the rest.

To win a third-tier Powerball prize, players match four white balls and the Power Ball. Philly Jawn was just one number away from winning the jackpot.
