A man from Adelphi says his lucky number is 24, and it proved to be accurate on June 21 when the Powerball drawn matched the 24 on his ticket and he scored a $150,000 prize.
“I usually go with my own numbers, but I liked this quick pick because it had a 24. I said, ‘Let’s go for it!’” he said July 31 after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
While at Lottery headquarters, he got some pictures on his phone of himself with a large novelty check, which will come in handy for convincing his wife of the win.
“She doesn’t believe it,” he said, noting he would also be taking her out to dinner to celebrate.
As for the lion’s share of the winnings, he said he plans to invest the money for the future.
The winner matched four of the first five balls drawn, plus that 24 Powerball, for a third-tier prize, but he also paid $1 extra for the Power Play option, which multiplied the $50,000 base prize by three for the $150,000 prize.
He purchased the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven store at 5414 Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale.
The next Powerball drawing is on Aug. 2 and the estimated annuity jackpot is $410 million, with a cash option of $184.9 million.
