Germantown Granddad Garners $100K Lottery Prize, His Second in 10 Years

A longtime Maryland Lottery player from Germantown is celebrating a return to the winner’s circle after two of his Bonus Match 5 tickets delivered prizes totaling $100,060.

The Montgomery County grandfather claimed the prize March 3, but that wasn’t his first visit to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, as he won a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize in late 2016.

The frequent player enjoys games such as Multi-Match and Powerball, but family inspiration played a key role in his latest win. He regularly selects numbers connected to his grandchildren, including his granddaughter’s birthdate and birth weight.

After the birth of his grandson two years ago, the retired insurance adjuster added a third combination to his original pair, and increased his purchase so he would have two combinations for each drawing. That decision paid off when one if his doubled combinations matched winning numbers and gave him two prizes of $50,000 each plus lower tier matches on his second and third combinations for another $60.

He discovered the win at home and quietly shared the news with his wife and daughter, who were both ecstatic.

“I just don’t get excited about things,” he said.

The winner remained calm and reserved when he visited Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim his winnings.

Although he does not have immediate plans for the recent winnings, he believes his wife may already have ideas.

“I’m pretty sure she will set up some cruises,” he said.

He plans to continue playing his favorite games and encourages other players to use their winnings wisely.

“Set up a plan and be frugal,” he said.

He bought the winning ticket at the Town Center Sunoco gas station at 19738 Germantown Road in Germantown and the shop receives a bonus of $1,000 as a result.
