A Pikesville man’s good deed turned profitable when a trip to the store for ingredients to make dinner for a friend turned into a $100,000 payday.
Known among family and friends for his cooking skills and famous stewed oxtails, the winner was shopping at Dollar Plus Mart at 8011 Liberty Road in Windsor Mill when he decided to buy a $10 Bingo X10 scratch-off ticket in addition to the ingredients on his list.
The casual Lottery player initially set the ticket aside, scratching it later that week, he said June 9 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
Days later, he took another look and realized he might be holding a big winner.
Wanting a second opinion, he showed the ticket to his mother, a frequent scratch-off player. After examining the ticket, she confirmed what he hoped was true: he had won the game’s $100,000 top prize.
The timing of the win couldn’t have been better. The Amazon employee said he has been working hard to pay off debts and recently moved in with his parents to save money.
“It’s been hard times,” he said.
The winner rode the bus to Lottery headquarters to claim his prize and said he plans to use his winnings to purchase a vehicle and pay bills.
Dollar Plus Mart will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling a top-prize-winning scratch-off.
Bingo X10 launched in March and offered six $100,000 top prizes. This is the second top prize claimed, leaving four remaining, along with numerous other prizes.
