A Baltimore County scratch-off fan decided last week that it was time to learn how to play Racetrax, which is her boyfriend’s favorite Lottery game. Both celebrated with screams of happiness when, by following his suggestions during a lesson in how to play the game, the lucky lady won $27,792.20.

“This is my first big win,” said the Windsor Mill resident, who has scored prizes of up to $1,000 playing scratch-offs. She selected the nickname “Miracles Happen” to tell her winning story. Her boyfriend, who is a loyal Racetrax player, has won prizes of $600 to $23,000 over the years.

“I really wanted to learn how to play,” she said, so the pair visited Johnny’s Bar & Liquors in Baltimore on July 20. His first suggestion was easy to follow. “He said to pick some numbers I feel good about,” recalled the 38-year-old. She came up with 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

Next, he helped her pick the Superfecta Wheel bet type, settle on 15 races with her number combinations for first, second, third and fourth place and then she bought her $18 ticket. On a Superfecta Wheel bet, the player selects at least five horses to finish first, second, third and fourth in exact order.

The horses left the starting gate and crossed the finish line in all sorts of combinations in each race but she didn’t win once. “He said, ‘Do it again,’” the discouraged woman said, “so I did replay. He wins off of replays.”

Rather than stay at the location and watch the next 15 races, the Racetrax novice left and went home. Her boyfriend later joined her and asked if she had checked her ticket yet. In reply, “Miracles Happen” pulled up the Lottery app on her mobile phone and checked the race results. To her shock and jubilation, in the 15th race, the horses crossed the finish line in the order of 11, 12, 8 and 7 for the big win.

Her happy boyfriend checked the ticket, too, using the app on his phone to confirm her big win. They were both screaming with happiness and jumping up and down. “I was crying, too,” the winner added. “I’ve never won that much.”

The mother of a 7-year-old daughter works for a nonprofit as a support planner for mentally and physically disabled adults. The winner plans to use the prize to pay bills, and will put the rest of the windfall into her savings account.

Her lucky retailer also shares in the win. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, Johnny’s Bar & Liquors located at 1600 North Rolling Road in Baltimore will receive a $277.92 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1% of the prize.
