A Burtonsville woman’s routine grocery trip turned unforgettable when she scratched her way to a $50,000scratch-off prize.
She visited Maryland Lottery headquarters July 23 with her husband to claim the prize and share the story behind her win.
She said she only picked up the hobby of playing scratch-offs a few years ago.
While shopping for groceries at Giant supermarket, she decided to stop at the Lottery vending machine before heading home. She purchased $20 worth of scratch-offs, including a $5 Multiply Your Money game.
Half of the tickets turned out to be winners. The first revealed a modest $5 prize, but it was the second winning ticket that changed everything.
“I was dumbfounded,” the winner said, recalling her feelings when she revealed the game’s $50,000 top prize.
Still in disbelief, she scanned the ticket to confirm the prize. Once the Lottery scanner verified her win, she hurried home to surprise her husband with the news.
The couple is taking a thoughtful approach to the windfall. While they haven’t decided exactly how they’ll use the prize money, the winner said she’ll wait until the money is “in the bank” before making any decisions.
Whatever they choose, she said it will be something “special.”
Despite the big win, she plans to continue playing scratch-offs simply for the fun of it.
The retailer that sold the ticket also has reason to celebrate as the Giant supermarket, at 1009 Fairlawn Street in the Prince George’s County part of Laurel, will receive a $500 bonus.
