District Heights Man’s Gut Feeling Leads to $100,000 Scratch-off Win

A retired Prince George’s County man is thanking his intuition after winning the $100,000 top prize on the Scratch & Match scratch-off. The fan of Lottery games said there was something special about that ticket.

“You know, some tickets call out to you,” he said Aug. 6 when he shared his story with Lottery officials. “Well, it was something about the Scratch & Match game that drew me to it.”

This calling occurred a few weeks ago when the player stopped at the Wawa in Capitol Heights to buy some scratch-offs. Bingo tickets are his favorite, so he purchased one of those and was drawn to the Scratch & Match game, and purchased one of those too. He went home to scratch his tickets.

The District Heights man said he scratches the numbers first, sees if he has any matches, and then scratches to see what prize is won. But, on the Scratch & Match game, the winner first saw a “stack of cash” symbol, which meant an automatic prize, but he kept scratching.

“So, then I get another ‘Stack of Cash’ and finished playing the game,” he said. “I was shocked when I saw the first $50,000 prize and blown away when I saw the other $50,000.”

The surprised player said his wife walked in the room as his prize was revealed and he immediately showed her the ticket.

“I had to look twice,” said the winner’s wife, who accompanied him to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “I thought it was a lesser prize at first, but it really was two $50,000 prizes.”

The winner wanted to confirm his win, so he went to his favorite Lottery retailer, who verified the $100,000 prize for him and gave information on how to claim the winnings.

He said he will use his winnings to pay off some bills and help family as needed.

The Wawa at 1401 Hampton Park Boulevard in Capitol Heights, where the ticket was bought, receives a $1,000 bonus.

The $10 Scratch & Match ticket launched in March 2026 with nine $100,000 top prizes and now has three remaining. In addition, there are two $50,000 prizes, nine $10,000 prizes and many $10 through $1,000 prizes still waiting to be found.
