Rich McFadden of Edgewood had a great Father’s Day as he spent time with his dad, watched the Orioles game and won $6,500 as the Home Run Riches Contestant of the Game.
Father’s Day was fun for Rich McFadden of Edgewood. He got to spend the day with his dad and watch Orioles baseball. Watching the game was a bit different than usual, though, since he was the Lottery’s Home Run Riches Contestant of the Game.
“When my name came up on the TV, my dad was shocked,” Rich said. “He said it was one of the best Father’s Day gifts ever.” He explained to Lottery officials that he hadn’t told his dad ahead of time that he was selected as the Contestant of the Game.
Winners receive $500 for being selected, $500 for each home run and $5,000 for each grand slam hit by the Orioles during their designated game.
The Orioles didn’t waste any time helping Rich pile up some cash as Ramón Urías hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning during the June 15 game.
“If you get a home run early, you are sitting pretty,” he said.
Then, in the 7th inning, the O’s had runners at second and third, and the Harford County resident was looking for player to get on first to load the bases. Rich got his wish when Gunnar Henderson was intentionally walked.
That brought Baltimore catcher Gary Sánchez to the plate with the bases loaded. When Rich saw that Sánchez had a stat of batting .308 and five home runs with bases loaded, he liked his odds. He sat back and watched with a huge smile as the ball left the park.
“When he hit that grand slam, the whole bar started to scream,” said the food service worker.
The O’s hit one more home run in the 8th inning, bringing Rich’s total to $6,500.
He was happy to get some extra spending money to use during a trip to Ocean City. He plans to place the rest in the bank.
This is the third grand slam hit by the Orioles in 2025. Rich joins Raymond Mitchell of Germantown and Kenneth Kline, Sr. of Baltimore.
